Awareness. Awareness about ayurveda as a holistic system!

I used to say to my students: “Go back to the roots of ayurveda!” What I meant was not only philosophical and metaphorical meaning, but also, I wanted to motivate them to prepare their own medicines from local herbs and plants. I asked them to prepare it, give it to the patients, and observe the changes. They should ‘feel it’. That is the main thing, to feel changes the patients are going through.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN AYURVEDA FOR YOU PERSONALLY?

It's a difficult question. Ayurveda has many definitions as a medical science, but for me ayurveda means more than that. Ayurveda is everything around me, it is part of my life. The main idea of ayurveda is not treating the diseases. Ayurveda is a path at the end of which you will find yourself as an individual being united with the environment, which surrounds you. It is a guide how to live a happy and healthy life.

HOW WAS YOUR JOURNEY TO AYURVEDA?

Ayurveda was always part of our family. I belong to the fourth generation of ayurveda doctors or Vaidiyas, as they were traditionally called before. Since childhood I have seen people visiting my grandfather and father in our house. I listened to their consultations with patients and observed a preparation of the medicines. But to be honest with you, as a child, I was not interested much in ayurveda. It has changed only after high school. As a student I automatically decided to study ayurveda. It was an unconscious decision, maybe because there was an ayurveda route shown by my family.

AND WHAT HAS BROUGHT YOU TO SWASWARA?

Actually, it was not a direct path. After my studies I began my ayurveda journey as a teacher at Santhigiri Ayurveda Medical College & Hospital in Palakkad, in Kerala. For few years I have combined teaching profession and hospital duty. Five years ago, it was quite a challenge to come to SwaSwara and change an ayurveda hospital environment to hospitality one.

We need more portals like Ayurveda Journals, which would explore ayurveda from various angles. Good luck to you…

IT MUST HAVE BEEN CHALLENG TO CHANGE HOSPITAL ENVIRONMENT TO HOSPITALITY ONE...

Yes, it was not only change from an ayurveda hospital environment to hospitality one, but also there is a different approach to patients in the hospitals and guests in the tourist resorts.

In hospital, we used to get more difficult cases and less restrictions for treatments. Local patients grew up with ayurveda as a part of their culture, so it was not necessary to explain them everything. Hospitality environment is totally different. One would say, it is only holiday for the guests, but it is not true. Paying for treatment and enjoying resort environment does not mean, that you get cured automatically. Guest' expectations are higher and it is also riskier for the doctors because you cannot force anyone to follow the treatment procedures.

I feel more responsible for the stay and healing process in the resort, not only because the most of the guests are foreigners, but also because in SwaSwara we are not compromising anything. We are very clear, that there is the 'tourist ayurveda' where you can go to and there is the 'classical, traditional, curative ayurveda' which is what we'd like to offer and focus on.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO OFFER AUTHENTIC AYURVEDA IN THE MODERN RESORTS?

It would be utopia to say, that we can do it completely. We cannot compare traditional lifestyle with modern way of living. If I compare it with previous generation of the ayurveda doctors, for example my father and grandfather, their knowledge of ayurveda and the style of diagnosis was almost identical, but there is a big difference in the treatment process and medication.

In the olden days, my father would only prescribe medicines, which could be prepared at home from few herbs and plants, he would only explain how to prepare the decoction and how to use it. The advantage of Kerala's tropical environment is, that all the medicines used to be from local sources and available freely everywhere. People grew up surrounded by nature and could easily benefit from it. Nowadays almost all the ayurvedic medicines are available in the pharmacies. Everything is certified and kept ready for instant usage. There are only few steps towards the mass usage of medicines as we can observe in the allopathy system of medicine...

WHAT IS THE SOLUTION?

Ayurveda doctors should only learn the ingrediencies and consistence of medicines. The treatment should be systematic and involve also invisible components of personal sensitivity and emotions.

AYURVEDA IS GETTING POPULAR ALSO ABROAD…

Yes, most of the people, who are visiting SwaSwara, have a good knowledge about ayurveda. There are lots of books published and great source of information is internet. But it is necessary to remark, that the source of information should be checked properly. We need more portals like Ayurveda Journals, which would explore ayurveda from various angles. Good luck to you…
