Awareness. Awareness about ayurveda as a holistic system!

I used to say to my students: “Go back to the roots of Ayurveda!” What I meant was not only philosophical and metaphorical meaning, but also, I wanted to motivate them to go to basic principles Ayurveda, prepare the medicines from local herbs and plants. I asked them to prepare it, give it to the patients, and observe the changes. They should ‘feel it’. That is the main thing, to find the changes patients are going through.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN AYURVEDA FOR YOU PERSONALLY?

It's a difficult question. Ayurveda have many definitions as a medical science, but for me Ayurveda is more than that. Ayurveda is everything surrounding me; it is part of my life. The ultimate aim of Ayurveda is not only treating the diseases but to guide the people to prevent diseases and improve the quality of life. Ayurveda is a path towards the health, at the end of which you will find yourself as an individual being connected with the environment, which surrounds you. It guides you how to live a happy and healthy life.

HOW WAS YOUR JOURNEY TO AYURVEDA?

Ayurveda was always a part of our family. I belong to the fourth generation of Ayurveda doctors or Vaidyas, as they were traditionally called before. Since childhood I have seen people visiting my father in our house. I listened to their consultations with patients and observed a preparation of the medicines in my home as mom herself prepares most of the medicine and I used to help them in preparations. But to be honest with you, as a child, I was not interested much in Ayurveda. It has changed only after my high school.  It was an unconscious decision, maybe because there was an Ayurveda route shown by my family. Later I joined to BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurveda Medicine and Surgery) course and started to love it and continued that path, and I have done post graduation also.

AND WHAT HAS BROUGHT YOU TO SWASWARA?

Actually, it was not a direct path. After my studies I began my Ayurveda journey as an Assistant professor at Santhigiri Ayurveda Medical College & Hospital in Palakkad, in Kerala. For few years I have combined teaching profession and hospital duty later transferred to PNNM Ayurveda Medical College and Hospital Cheruturuthi, Thrissur. And  I was not knowing anything about the hospitality sector as am totally from the hospital environment and thought to take a new challenge in hospitality field that is in SwaSwara.

We need more portals like Ayurveda Journals, which would explore ayurveda from various angles. Good luck to you…

IT MUST HAVE BEEN CHALLENG TO CHANGE HOSPITAL ENVIRONMENT TO HOSPITALITY ONE...

Yes, it was a challenge initially, that change from an Ayurveda hospital environment to hospitality because of the different approach to patients in the hospitals and wellness centres like SwaSwara in terms of handling more responsibilities compared to a hospital.

Hospitality environment is totally different, treatment approach will be same in both sector as we cannot serve two kinds of ayurveda, wherever you go principles of ayurveda will be same and it should be, but the mode of approach may changes. Under a wellness concept it is a holistic approach towards the customer.

In SwaSwara we are not compromising anything, we will make it very clear what we are going to do, ayurveda what we are dealing here is the ‘Classical/traditional, preventive and curative” is what we would like to focus on. In the name of tourism we don’t want to dilute the principles of ayurveda, we would like to spread the benefits of ayurveda and throughout the world and motivate the people.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO OFFER AUTHENTIC AYURVEDA IN THE MODERN RESORTS?

Yes, we can and I don’t believe there is a classification like authentic and unauthentic ayurveda, wherever you go its principles will be same and it should be, may be the mode practise may changes but not the quality. Of course we cannot compare traditional lifestyle with modern way of living, but the basic principles of health are same. Under tourism many places are diluting the ayurveda principles and spreading ayurveda means massage in such cases government authorities are having important role to prevent such practises I feel.

In  olden days, my father used to prescribe medicines which could be prepared at home from the local herbs and plants, he would only explain how to prepare the medicine and how to use it, and now most of the medicines are ready made and available in market and kept ready for instant usage. The advantage of Kerala's tropical environment is that all the raw medicines are available from local sources.

WHAT IS THE SOLUTION?

Awareness. Awareness about ayurveda as a holistic system!

I used to say to my students: “Go back to the roots of ayurveda!” What I meant was not only philosophical and metaphorical meaning, but also, I wanted to motivate them to go to basic principles of Ayurveda, prepare the medicines from local herbs and plants. I asked them to prepare it, give it to the patients, and observe the changes. They should ‘feel it’. That is the main thing, to feel changes the patients are going through. Doctors should able the gain the confidence of the patient and should stick with basic principles of Ayurveda result will come in your way.

They should know the ingredients and consistence of medicines. Nowadays Government has started to include basics of Ayurveda in the curriculum it may help the create awareness in the students. The treatment should be systematic and involve also invisible components of personal sensitivity and emotions.

AYURVEDA IS GETTING POPULAR ALSO ABROAD…

Yes, most of the people, who are visiting SwaSwara, have a good knowledge about ayurveda and many of them are benefitted with the ayurveda treatments in chronic disorders. There are lots of books published and great source of information is internet. But it is necessary to remark, that the source of information should be checked properly. I feel the popularity is because of its results in the medical world, ayurveda is considering as an alternative medicine nowadays. We need more portals like Ayurveda Journals, which would explore Ayurveda from various angles. Good luck to you…

Ayurveda has many definitions as medical science. But the main idea of Ayurveda, not treating the diseases. We should see and take it as a part of our life and self-exploration. For me ayurveda means everything.
