A PLACE, WHERE YOU CAN LONG LIFE

Mythology says that 'Soma' is extracted from a plant called 'somaltha', drink of Gods that gives you eternity, and 'theeram' is the word for shore in Malayalam. The name Somatheeram means a place (or shore) where you will get long life.

This name was given to resort by Mr. Baby Mathew, founder and director of Somatheeram Ayurveda Group. Somatheeram, his first ayurveda project started in 1988 and Manaltheeram in 1990. Both resorts are offering the same ayurveda treatment programmes and services. The only difference is the location. Somatheeram is situated on the top of the cliff and have beautiful view on the bay. Manaltheeram is almost touching the Chowara beach.

THE AYURVEDA PEOPLE

According to Dr. Hemalatha Manoj,  ayurveda is a divine science of life and it is a special personal relationship to each and every patient, which makes Manaltheeram a healing place. The hands of the doctors should be pure when they treat a patient. God of Ayurveda, Dhanvantari is worshipped every day in silent prayers to give the blessings to cure the patients. As she says: "God should give us the power to heal. Sometimes we cannot cure every patient, but it is important not to make any mistakes from our hands. This is the only pray, which I have as a doctor to lord."

AYURVEDA DOCTORS & THERAPISTS

All the treatments take place under the supervision of senior doctor Dr.Hemalatha Manoj, and other 8 qualified doctors, around 30 therapists and 3 yoga teachers, who strictly follows traditional methods and values, but at the same time keep high level of modern standards. There are 25 treatment rooms including two steam baths available in the ayurveda center. Two therapists are alloceted for each patient, who take care about him or her during entire stay at Somatheeram. There is a rule that ladies gets female therapists and gentlemen get men therapists. For repeated clients they always try to allocate the same doctors and therapists.

AYURVEDA THERAPIES & PROGRAMMES

Manaltheeram have received NABH (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Health Care Providers), the highest recognition of the Indian government in the hospitals and health care sector. The main treatment programmes are: Rejuvenation Therapy (Rasayana Chikilsa), Body Purification (Shodhana Chikilsa), Slimming Programme, Stress Management Programme And Beauty Care Programme. The final decision of the programme will be always taken by the consulting doctor. Duration of the treatments may vary according to the direction of the doctor and process may change depending upon the patient’s body condition.

"In our brochures is written, that we are ‘The Ayurveda People’. It is not only slogan - ayurveda is the soul and essence of Somatheeram. We have been providing ayurvedic treatment the traditional way for more than 20 years." Baby Mathew

YOGA & MEDITATION

Every Manaltheeram ayurveda programme includes yoga lessons in different levels according to patient’s need. Yoga is supplementing ayurveda treatments. It is believed, it is very important to balance body treatment with the peace of the mind, because the most of the patients have stress-related psychosomatic diseases. Yoga can be very helpful for body pain problems, but not only physical problems must be treated, but also mental conditions. During the day the yoga lessons for beginners, intermediate and advanced level yogi practitioners are provided. Every morning and evening, there is meditation session. Patients can take also private lessons on request.

FOOD FOR HEALTH

After the first consultation with ayurveda doctor, patients get the diet plan suitable for their doshas. It depends on their health conditions and treatment programme. The ayurveda diet is pure vegetarian. It is based on local recipes, but we try to serve organic vegetables and fruits. In the restaurant breakfast, lunch and dinner is served as a buffet, divided according the doshas into three categories – vata, pita, and kapha. For some serious cases or also for slimming programme patients, the food is cooked separately or they can take some food from buffet after the consultation with Dietologist. Between the main meals fruit juices and ayurvedic herbal water are served.

LIVING SPACE

The principles of Vastu Shastra - an ancient art, how to build and construct houses considering environment, flow of the energy and nature elements - were considered during the designing and construction process of the resort. Nature is part of it. The houses and cottages are hidden under the shade of the tropical trees. The most of them have small herb and flower gardens in the front and provide a nice sea view. All the houses are built from eco-friendly materials, properly ventilated to allow natural airflow. Also sunlight movement during the day was taken into the consideration. All these small things make one to stay on for longer and to visit this place again and again.

Five categories of the rooms are described in Photo Gallery

BEYOND AYURVEDA

The healing environment is also important. Many foreigners, who are taking ayurveda treatment in Manaltheeram, are from cold or landlocked countries. For them, a beach scenery and a sunlight are very important elements. But during the treatment process, it is not recommend to patients to walk or take a bath in the sea.

In addition to undergoing a rejuvenating experience through Ayurveda, Yoga and a very tranquil atmosphere, Manaltheeram offers variety cultural programmes, which are part of Somatheeram evenings and helps in getting acquainted with the various dance, music and cultural art forms of Kerala.
