According to World Health Organization, Disease is termed as any harmful deviation from the normal structural or functional state of an organism, generally associated with certain signs and symptoms and differing in nature from physical injury. In Ayurveda, disease is termed as Vyaadhi. The ancient Indian physician, Charaka had defined Vyaadhi as “Vividham dukham aadadhaati iti vyaadhi” which means the one that brings pain or grief in the body and mind.
Ayurveda explains disease as an imbalance in the harmonious state of the body. This imbalance can occur due to internal factors like aggravation or decrease in body humors, external factors like trauma, toxins or at the level of mind. That which causes uneasiness or grief to the body or mind is called disease.
"Rogasthu dosha vaishamyam” means 'roga or disease' is the 'vaishamya or change' happening to three doshas: Vata, Pitta, Kapha. These three factors are influenced negatively by internal and external causes such as food, emotions, activity, genetic factors, regimen, which all can vitiate and influence the other components of the human body like tissues and other factors.
Ayurveda has another definition also, to describe disease ”Dhathu Vaishamyam”, dhatus means tissues of human body. It means the changes happening in body tissues, but dhatus will be vitiated only by the vitiated dosha, so we can confirm roga or disease is due to the vitiation of three doshas “Rogasthu dosha vaishamyam”.
