NAMASTE!

ART EXHIBITION IN DAVID HALL ART GALLERY & CAFÉ, FORT COCHIN, 10TH - 23RD DECEMBER 2019

Artist Susan Beaulah is greatly inspired by two things - the flat agricultural landscapes of East Yorkshire and rural life in India. As a landscape painter who paints outdoors from direct observation, her work revolves around these two major locations, but what won her heart was the Kerala Chakara.

For over twenty years, Susan documented the Kerala Chakara, a unique fishing phenomena on the coast of Kerala, South India. Her studio is in Hull with Kingston Artist Group. In 2017 Susan had two successful shows one "Flow", studies of the river Hull in East Yorkshire and The other "Red Earth and Blue Water", studies of Indian life.

"India fullfilled my desire to include people in my landscape paintings. In the English landscape the figures never seem to add to the atmosphere, yet in India they are a natural and beautiful part of it. The vibrant colours inspire me and the rural scenes fill me with nostalgia."

Since 2002 I spent every winter in India,  painting these watercolour scenes of a fishing phenomenom known as the Chakara on the remote beaches of Kerala in South India. All these paintings are produced on the spot and are a documentation of life as it is.

Acclimatising to the hardships of the beach and negotiating a working relationship with the local fishermen was a delicate and often nerve wracking experience. I had to employ a guide. My umbrella is a popular place for the fisher folk to sit, it provides shade and entertainment as I paint for my audience as well as myself.

Figures are added to my paintings on demand and the details on their boats must be included. This input of their energy makes my studies quite unique.

I hold the belief that a simple life, close to nature, imbued with sense of belonging, is more real, and certainly more beautiful to look at, than a more commercially developed world.
